Home Smelly And Seen Insects? You May Have Stink Bugs

Stink bugs are named this for a good reason as they smell bad. They look for warm places to hide during the winter months, which may be underneath bark, in mulch, and in homes. If you have seen one you likely have many more. Fortunately, there are ways to get these stinky bugs out of your house and things you can do to prevent them from coming back.

Try Things Yourself

There are many things you can try yourself to get the stink bugs out. If you see a lot of them in one place, use your vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment to suck them up then throw away the bag. You may find them in drawers, on top of counters, on top of curtains, etc.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) can also work to kill stink bugs. You can purchase this at garden centers or home improvement stores. Make sure the bag you purchase says food grade so it will not harm you or your family. Spread the powder around your windows and all entryways. If a stink bug walks through the powder, they breathe it in and die of dehydration.

Hire a Pest Control Company

If you are still seeing a lot of stink bugs your home may be infested with them. At this point, you should hire a pest control company. They know where to look for their hiding place. One area may be in your attic or your crawlspace. The pest control company will then use different methods to kill these stinky bugs.

Once they are finished, they will do a thorough inspection of your home to ensure the bugs are gone. They can also give you many tips on what you can do in the future if they come back again.

Stink Bug Prevention

Blocking points of entry is the best prevention you can do. Inspect around doors and windows and use caulking to fill in any damaged seals. Check the weather stripping around windows and doors to ensure it is in good condition. If not replace the weather stripping. This can also help with your energy bills as air will also get through damaged weather stripping.

If you have window screens, check these to make sure there are no holes. If holes are found, patch them up. Also, the screens need to fit securely so there is no space. There is stink bug spray that you can purchase to spray in different areas that will repel the bugs from entering your home.

A pest control company can give you much more information about these insects.
